August Updates
Summer has been awesome! But there is something to look forward to about school starting back and routine being back in place. Let's lean into that. Here's a few things coming up:
Skill Night - August 26th
On Friday August 26th at 630pm, we are going to have a skills class on Rowing. Rowing efficiency is a big deal and this will give us an opportunity to break down proper rowing and help us get better at it.
Competitors Class - August 27th
On Saturday August 27th, we will have a competitors class at 8am before the 9am workout. Remember, you do not have to consider yourself a competitor to come. This class just gives us an opportunity to do movements and workouts that are more the style of a competition which can be really fun.
Casino Night 2022 - October 22nd
Casino Night is happening again! If you came last year, you know it was a blast. This year it will a little closer to town. It is going to be at The No'Alan, where Zoe's on the Lake used to be. It will start at 6pm and end at 9pm. There will be raffles prizes, a 50/50 raffle, and food and drinks will be provided. We want this to be an opportunity to get outside of the gym and have a great time while raises some money for equipment in the gym. As far as what to wear, think semi-formal. It will be fun to dress up a little! The cost is $150 for couple or $80 if you come alone, and tickets can be purchased at the gym or on our Facebook page. More information about the night are on that page as well! Let us know if you have any questions.
Squats
We are coming up on the end of our squat cycles. I believe many of you have already hit a new personal best! But next week we will work up to a heavy 2 rep. Remember, we are trying to stay healthy so make sure you are confident with the lift. This is a good opportunity to measure our progress though.
Games Week - August 15-19
After Squats are over for a bit, we usually take a couple of weeks off of strength cycles to reset. This is good timing for us to also do a Games Week. For those of you that didn't know, the NoBull CrossFit Games are going on this week. So for Games Week, we will take 5 workouts that they performed at the games and we will give them a try! Obviously, we will adjust and modify the workouts to make them doable and most of us can expect to be much slower than the games athletes. But this is still a lot of fun to somewhat experience what these professional CrossFit athletes go through. This will be fun!
These workouts are not incredibly far off from our everyday workouts, in fact some of them are probably easier in some ways. So don't let the fact that these are "Games Workouts" be intimidating. Let's have fun with it.
HPE 147
As we have for the past few years, we have a couple of JSU Classes meeting to do CrossFit for elective credit hours at the gym. The class meets M/W at 1230 and T/TH at 1245. If you or someone you know needs an elective class, this is a good one! We are also going to try and let the college students jump into some of the regular classes during the semester too so you may see some new faces!
Food For Thought
You need to play more. I'm not talking being silly and playing grab-butt. I'm talking approach things like a game that you are trying to win. This doesn't necessarily mean winning against other classmates; it can simply mean winning against yourself. But creating a challenge or game for yourself allows you to play and thus have the opportunity to win.
The style of our workouts allow for this perfectly. In games, you have a strategy that gives you the best chance of winning, right? When we are coaching, one of our goals is to set you up with a strategy for the workout that provides you with the best opportunity to be successful as well. Note that I didn't say the strategy that makes it the easiest or makes you the most comfortable. For those of you who played sports or participated in any competition, you know that success comes at the cost of being fairly uncomfortable. But because of this strategy, things turn from a miserable workout into a "game" which takes your mind off of being uncomfortable and helps you focus on "winning" that workout. Again, i'm not talking about being the fastest or strongest in the class. I'm talking winning thew workout against yourself.
The second part of this, and also very important, is that playing and winning grants you a small amount of joy from the satisfaction of being successful. You need this. You have to be proud of yourself for the work you put in at the gym or it's only a matter of time before you burn out. And let me tell you, every one of you should be proud of the work you do in here. So set yourself up to play the game, play it well with a good strategy (aka listen to your coach), and recognize your wins.
And last, not to be overlooked, study after study proves that you go harder when you are playing. And we know that intensity = faster results.
You guys are awesome! We are excited for a great fall. See you in the gym.
