February Updates

It's been a great start to 2023 so far. We have definitely got some exciting things coming up for you guys this month! Here is what you need to know:

250 Class Club & 500 Class Club

One of our goals this year is to let you guys know that we see you and we see the hard work you are putting in, especially our long term members. You should be proud of that! As we are proud of you. The 250 Class Club is the list of people who have exceeded 250 class attendances in the lifetime of their membership with the gym. This would take nearly a year of coming every day that the doors are open to achieve. The 500 Class Club is the list of those who have exceeded 500 classes, which is quite impressive. Obviously, those of you who aren't good at remembering to check in will not get recognized as you maybe should. But those numbers are all we have to go off of.

If you are in one of these 2 groups, we would love to put your picture (very small) on the wall at the gym. You are not required to let us take your picture, but this is something to be proud of, no doubt!

Intern & New Coach - Jordan Evans

You have probably seen Jordan Evans around the gym more often lately. Jordan is interning with us this semester, and she will also begin to coach some classes after she gets her coaching certification soon. We are very excited to have her and you should be too!

One of the tasks we have given Jordan is to be our Client Success Manager. Her role is going to be to get feedback from you guys on your goals, what obstacles you are facing to reaching those goals, how we can help you, and how much you are enjoying the gym overall. You should hear from her over the next couple of months as she will be reaching out with some questions.

Podcast

Yes, it's still happening! I apologize for the delay. We are in the process of taking over the old SCI office next door and decided to hold off on recording until we could let them move out and set our things up in there. It should be soon! Please continue to send us any topic ideas that you are curious about.

Google Review Burpee Challenge

I know many of you believe I (John) enjoy inflicting pain on you during these workouts that I program. While that may or may not be true, here is your chance to get me back! Simply leave CrossFit Thelo a review on Google and/or Facebook and at the end of the month, I will do 10 burpees for every new review that we get this month (Im nervous how many it may be, but I'm going to do it anyway!).

From the outside looking in, Google Reviews and Facebook Reviews seem to smooth the uneasiness for potential new members of trying out our classes for the first time. So if you like the gym, let us know it!

Athlete of the Month - John David Phillips

JD is a consistent 6am class member. He is one of the most interesting and likable guys you will ever talk to. In case you didn't know, he also played Quarterback for the University of Alabama. He's a cool guy and we are glad to have him be a part of the gym. If you see JD, give him a solid fist bump.

Red Bird Coffee Perks

For the month of February, all gym members (does not include punch cards) will get double punches towards a free coffee at Red Bird! That means 1 free coffee drink for every 5 coffees instead of every 10, which is a pretty big deal! So take advantage of it this month. We will sent out an email with a specific logo to all members, and all you have to do is show the cashier at Red Bird to get your 2 punches on your rewards card.

If you don't yet have a Red Bird Coffee Rewards Card, they'll get you one!

CrossFit Open 2023 & Friday Night Lights

The Open is coming up in less than 3 weeks! The teams have been picked and you should hear from your team captains soon if you haven't already. CrossFit HQ will announce the workout on Thursday and we will program the workout for Friday. Each of those Fridays (Feb. 17th, 24th, & Mar. 3rd) we will have Friday Night Lights.

Friday Night Lights will take place instead of our normal Friday Afternoon classes (you do not have to be on a team to participate). We will schedule heat times through the Push Press app where you will reserve a spot for a heat time. You will be responsible for your own warm up and being ready to go at the workout time.

These 3 Fridays are a lot of fun! And a good way to have some friendly competition with our fitness. Even if you aren't on a team, please come workout, hangout, and cheer on everyone else. Let's have a good time with it!

Drink/Water Form

Start this month, we are doing away with the paper form for your drink/water tab. Instead, we will be using the iPad. The process is simple. You will select you drink you want to buy, go to the cart, and type your name to add it to your account. As with the paper form, you will not be charged until the end of the month!

If you use cash though, the process remains the same. Just put the money in the bucket and don't worry about using the iPad.

Food For Thought

I think we should often revisit the the fact that continually putting yourself in uncomfortable situations willingly, will reap incredible rewards. I reminded my college class of this earlier this semester. It isn't easy to get up early and come to the gym or get off of work and come to the gym, knowing very well that you are about to get very uncomfortable in the workout ahead of you. It doesn't feel good in the moment, but the alternative is detrimental.

The alternative is to stay in bed or just go home. While some days this may be needed, developing a habit of doing the most comfortable thing will only leave you feeling lazy, unaccomplished, and anxious. Dopamine (the brain chemical that makes you feel good) is released when you have a task to accomplish and you do it. The feeling is even greater when the task is more uncomfortable and difficult. In our scenario, the workout of the day is the task at hand and in most cases it is not the most comfortable or convenient thing to do. But getting over yourself and doing it anyway makes you feel good, regardless of if it was your best effort. The result over time is a much happier, healthier person.

See you in the gym!
